The cities of Chachapoyas, Arequipa, and Moquegua have stood out in the Peruvian labor landscape as the localities with the highest salaries, according to data compiled by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) and the Peruvian Institute of Economics (IPE). Despite the fact that in Chachapoyas, located in the Amazonas region, the average monthly income in 2023 was S/ 1,599, the capital city of this region recorded a monthly salary of S/ 2,228.7, surpassing both its own previous remuneration and that of other cities in the country. Although employment in Chachapoyas decreased slightly by 0.9% in the last year, reaching an informality level of 60%, the formal labor rate in the city is 40%, one of the highest compared to other capital cities. This low informality rate, along with the diversification of sectors such as Education, Tourism, and Public Administration, has contributed to the increase in average incomes in the region. In the case of Arequipa, where the average salary was S/ 2,206.6 in 2023, 44% of workers are formal, highlighting a productive structure that includes industry and mining. On the other hand, Moquegua experienced an increase in its average income to S/ 2,174.3, driven by productivity in mining activities and lower informality in this sector. Experts agree that the presence of formal and strategic sectors, such as industry and mining, as well as lower labor informality, are determining factors in the increase of salaries in these cities. Additionally, the export of agricultural products and the development of port infrastructure in Arequipa and Moquegua have contributed to economic growth and the level of productivity of employees, reflected in their remuneration. In conclusion, the analysis of incomes in Chachapoyas, Arequipa, and Moquegua highlights the importance of labor formality, the diversification of productive sectors, and infrastructure as fundamental pillars for the increase of salaries in these cities, positioning them as benchmarks in the Peruvian economic landscape.
