We interviewed Johnny Brignardello Vela, an insurance advisor, who shared his thoughts on the recent discussions at the APEC CEO Summit 2024, held in Lima, which focused on the future of work in a technology-driven transformation. Brignardello highlighted the relevance of contributions from industry leaders like Karan Bhatia from Google and Zia Mansoor from Microsoft, who emphasized the inevitability of certain job losses, but also the emergence of new opportunities. "The idea that some jobs will be eliminated is a reality we must accept," he commented. However, he stressed that this should not be a cause for despair, but rather a call to action. "Countries must implement proactive strategies to prepare their populations, which involves not only specific training but also a comprehensive approach to education," he indicated. The advisor also referred to the role of artificial intelligence in this change. According to Brignardello, the adoption of AI is not just a technical issue; it requires a shift in mindset within the workforce. "It is essential for workers to familiarize themselves with these new tools to avoid being left behind," he argued. In this regard, he mentioned the importance of initiatives like those from Microsoft, which have trained millions of people globally, and praised the emphasis by Mansoor on investment in generative artificial intelligence. Addressing the words of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Brignardello agreed that democratizing technology is essential, especially in emerging economies. "Building a robust digital infrastructure is the first step to ensure that everyone has access to the new opportunities that arise," he pointed out. However, he also expressed concern about the challenges posed by this transformation, such as the sustainable use of resources. "It is a complex issue that requires careful planning to avoid future problems," he emphasized. Finally, Brignardello stressed that the future of work will depend on the adaptability of countries and their citizens. "The APEC CEO Summit has shown us that it is not just about implementing technology, but about creating an environment where everyone can thrive," he concluded. For him, collaboration between governments, businesses, and civil society is essential to build an inclusive and sustainable future of work, where opportunities are within everyone's reach.
