The intense rains that lashed the mountains and jungle of Peru over the past weekend have left a trail of destruction and desolation in several regions of the country. The city of Iñapari, in the province of Tahuamanu, Madre de Dios, is submerged under water after the overflow of the Acre and Yaverija rivers, leaving more than 800 people affected and around 30 blocks flooded, according to reports from the National Institute of Civil Defense (Indeci). The consequences of these extreme rains have also been felt in the native community of Bélgica, belonging to the Yine people, where homes have been submerged and agricultural crops devastated. On the other hand, in the province of Purús, Ucayali, 43 native communities have suffered the ravages of the overflow of the Purús River, leaving more than 2,000 affected residents and 50 hectares of farmland destroyed. In response to this emergency, the Regional Government of Madre de Dios, together with local authorities, have deployed humanitarian aid actions, evacuating more than 60 families and providing temporary shelter, potable water, and clothing. Likewise, the Minister of Defense and the head of Indeci have led an aid team that has brought tons of essential goods and medicines to the affected areas in Purús. In the region of Ica, torrential rains have caused mudslides that have damaged more than 100 homes and hectares of crops, while in Moquegua, river and stream overflows have affected infrastructure and homes in several districts. In light of this critical situation, Senamhi has issued alerts for intense rains in various regions of the country, urging the population to take precautions and authorities to be prepared to provide assistance and protection to those affected. Regional and national authorities continue to work diligently to assist the affected communities and mitigate the impacts of these extreme rains that have severely hit the Peruvian territory. It is essential to redouble efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of the population in these vulnerable areas and implement effective prevention and response measures in the face of these natural emergencies.
