The Government of the Republic of Colombia has expressed its "strong rejection" of the recent irresponsible statements made by the President of the Republic of Argentina, Javier Milei, in which he attacked Colombian President Gustavo Petro. According to a statement issued by the Foreign Ministry, these offensive statements were made during a political conference of right-wing forces in Washington, DC, and later in an interview with a Colombian television channel. During his participation in the annual convention of the American right-wing CPAC, Milei made derogatory comments towards Petro, whom he described as "a murderous communist who is sinking" the country. These statements have caused unease in Colombia, leading to a crisis in the bilateral relationship between the two countries. The Colombian Foreign Ministry has stated that these disrespectful and repetitive statements by Milei are an offense to the dignity of the democratically elected Colombian President. For this reason, the Colombian government had recalled its ambassador to Argentina in January, following similar statements by the Argentine president. The tension between Petro and Milei is not new, as both political leaders have had a strained relationship. Since Milei was a presidential candidate, Petro has criticized his derogatory comments about socialists, even comparing them to Hitler's speeches. The situation has become even more delicate with Milei's recent statements, leading to a new protest from the Colombian government. Amid this controversy, it is expected that the relations between Colombia and Argentina will be affected by these offensive statements, creating a climate of diplomatic tension between the two countries.
