Romantic chatbots, such as Nvidia's "Chat with RTX," have gained popularity for offering companionship and conversations that simulate being with a real person. However, the Mozilla Foundation has exposed in its latest analysis that these chatbots pose a risk to the privacy and security of users' personal data. These programs collect a wide range of personal and sensitive information from users, from details about their health and sexuality to their ideologies, without providing adequate security and privacy guarantees. The lack of transparency regarding vulnerability management and the use of encryption, combined with the presence of numerous trackers to collect information from the device, increases users' exposure to potential security breaches and hacks. Additionally, the opacity surrounding the companies developing these chatbots is highlighted, with many of them being new or unknown to the Mozilla Foundation. The analysis also reveals concerning cases of misuse of information by chatbots, such as a man who committed suicide after interactions with a chatbot and a young user sentenced for attempting to attack the queen following AI suggestions. Despite these alarming findings, the Mozilla Foundation acknowledges that there are people interested in using these chatbots and advises them to take measures such as using strong passwords, deleting personal data after use, not sharing personal information to train AI, and restricting access to elements such as the camera, microphone, and location.
