The sale of electrified vehicles in Peru has experienced a notable growth during the first month of the year 2024, reaching a historical record compared to previous periods. According to official figures, 509 units were sold in January, representing an increase of 70.2% compared to the same month of the previous year. Alberto Morisaki, who released these data, highlighted that light hybrid vehicles were the best-selling, followed by conventional hybrids, pure electric vehicles, and plug-in hybrids. He also emphasized that light hybrids are preferred by consumers, representing 59% of sales of zero or low emission vehicles. Despite this growth, Morisaki pointed out that the market for electrified vehicles in the country is still small compared to other countries in the region such as Colombia. While in Colombia sales of eco-friendly vehicles accounted for 19.1% of the total in January 2024, in Peru they only reached 3.3%. The manager of Economic Studies and Statistics of the AAP highlighted that the increase in the sale of electrified vehicles in Peru is due to a greater awareness among the population and companies about the importance of acquiring efficient vehicles that contribute to reducing polluting emissions, as well as to the expansion of the supply of this type of vehicles in the national market. However, he stressed the need for greater support from the authorities to promote this market and achieve greater growth in line with other countries in the region. The promotion of zero and low emission vehicles would not only benefit the environment, but also improve the quality of life of the population in general. In this context, associations of small shop owners, SMEs, and foreign trade have requested a meeting with the new Minister of Economy to address the issue of the Selective Consumption Tax (ISC) and its impact on the acquisition of electrified vehicles. It is expected that this meeting could lay the groundwork for new policies to promote the market for eco-friendly vehicles in the country. In conclusion, the growth in the sale of electrified vehicles in Peru is a positive sign of the evolution towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation. However, greater support from the authorities and society in general is still needed to consolidate this progress and continue reducing polluting emissions in the country.
