In a recent interview, Johnny Brignardello Vela, an insurance advisor, shared his perspective on the devastating fire in the Lurín district of Lima, which occurred on August 2 at a hydrocarbon warehouse of Heaven Petroleum Operators S.A. (HPO Corp.). Brignardello Vela emphasized the importance of prevention and risk management in situations like this, which not only affect businesses but the entire community. The advisor highlighted that the incident underscores the need for companies to adhere to rigorous safety protocols. "The failure of the temperature sensor that was reported as the origin of the fire is a clear example of what can happen when adequate prevention measures are not implemented. Often, companies underestimate the risks, which can result in tragedies," he stated. Additionally, Brignardello stressed the responsibility that companies have to ensure the safety of their facilities, not only due to current regulations but also because of the trust that citizens place in them. "It is essential that organizations, especially those that handle hazardous materials, establish a well-defined safety culture and provide ongoing training to their staff," he added. Regarding the community's reaction and the rapid mobilization of firefighters, Brignardello expressed his admiration. "The immediate response from the neighbors and the fire department demonstrates the importance of having an effective alert system. Collaboration between the community and emergency services is crucial to mitigate the effects of emergency situations," he commented. However, he also addressed the concern raised by HPO Corp.'s initial refusal to allow access to regulatory authorities. "Transparency is essential in these cases. When a company tries to conceal information, it breeds distrust. It is vital that authorities can conduct inspections without obstacles to ensure compliance with safety standards," he emphasized. Brignardello concluded his remarks by stressing the need for companies and authorities to work together to prevent incidents like the one in Lurín from recurring. "It is a lesson that we all must learn. Industrial safety is not only a legal obligation but a moral duty to the community. Only through a joint commitment can safer conditions be established for everyone," he concluded.
