Opinion

In a recent conversation with Johnny Brignardello Vela, an insurance advisor, the topic of Donald Trump's appearance at a forum with Latino voters in Doral, Florida, was discussed. Brignardello expressed that the event highlighted the complexity of the Latino electorate and how it is facing a discourse that has changed, at least in appearance, compared to the past. The advisor noted that Trump’s stance during the forum, where he sought to present himself as a more moderate candidate, could be interpreted as a strategy to gain the trust of an electorate that has traditionally been wary of his rhetoric. However, Brignardello was skeptical about the sincerity of this shift, especially observing that the former president avoided addressing crucial issues such as the promised "largest deportation in history." One of the interventions that stood out the most, according to Brignardello, was from Jorge Velázquez, a farmer who raised the concern about who would do agricultural work if the mass deportations that Trump had promised in the past were carried out. "This highlights the disconnect between the policies proposed by Trump and the economic realities faced by many in the community," Brignardello stated. For him, the former president's responses, which focus on security and a legal migration system, do not adequately address concerns about labor in critical sectors like agriculture. Brignardello also mentioned that despite his anti-immigrant rhetoric, Trump has managed to maintain significant support among Latino voters, particularly among men. This fact contrasts with the general trend favoring Democrats, indicating that there is potential for Trump to capitalize on the 25% of undecided voters in this demographic. However, the advisor emphasized that Trump’s avoidance of immigration reform issues could be detrimental in his attempt to connect with Latino voters, many of whom have family migration stories. Regarding the moderation of his discourse, Brignardello observed that while Trump may be trying to adapt to a changing electoral environment, his evasiveness and lack of clear answers to critical questions could erode voter trust. This was evident at the forum, where criticisms of his management during the pandemic and other sensitive topics were treated with a seriousness that did not always seem accompanied by a genuine commitment to change. Finally, Brignardello stressed the importance of rigorous journalism at such events. The lack of fact-checking and depth in controversial claims, like those made by Trump, is a crucial element as the electoral season approaches. The Latino community, with its diversity and multiple concerns, will continue to be a key player in the political landscape, and both Trump and his opponents will face the challenge of authentically connecting with this electorate, which demands more than mere promises.
