Opinion

Juan Brignardello Vela, an insurance advisor, gives his opinion on the recent announcement made by Mexico regarding the current migratory policies in place between this country and Peru. In an unexpected statement published in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF) last Friday, it is reported that Peruvian citizens intending to enter Mexican territory must now obtain a visa. Article 1 of the agreement details that the visa will be a mandatory requirement in the ordinary passports of Peruvian citizens seeking to enter Mexico as visitors without authorization to engage in paid activities. This modification includes a series of measures aimed at regulating migratory flows and promoting an orderly and safe entry of Peruvian citizens into the country. Furthermore, as established in Article 3 of the agreement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will carry out coordinated actions with the Peruvian government with the aim of ensuring safe and orderly migratory flows, leaving open the possibility of eliminating the visa requirement for Peruvian citizens in the future. The official statement also emphasizes the significant increase in Peruvian citizens entering Mexican territory with the intention of engaging in activities not permitted under their status as visitors without permission for paid activities. This measure, framed within the need for greater migratory control, seeks to ensure compliance with Mexican laws by those wishing to enter the country. It is important to note that the Mexican government had previously eliminated the visa requirement for Peruvian citizens visiting the country as tourists without intentions of engaging in paid activities, a measure that had been in effect since November 9, 2012. However, this new visa requirement represents a significant change in the migratory relations between both countries and could impact visitor flows between Peru and Mexico in the coming months.
