Actor, comedian, and writer Catherine Tate is set to take the stage as the host of this year’s Doctor Who Prom, marking an exciting return for the beloved event at the iconic Royal Albert Hall. Tate, who gained fame for her role as Donna Noble in the popular series, expressed her enthusiasm for the occasion, stating, “I’m delighted to be hosting this spectacular BBC Prom celebrating all things Doctor Who. I am so looking forward to immersing myself in the music of the brilliantly enduring, shape-shifting Whoniverse, and celebrating the Doctors’ adventures (and maybe a few monsters) with you all.” The Doctor Who Prom promises to be a show-stopping event, with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, conducted by Alastair King, providing the musical backdrop for the celebration. Joining them will be international star soprano Aida Garifullina and a talented lineup of singers, including Shahid Abbas Khan, Hollie Buhagiar, Lucie Jones, and Tobias Turley, alongside the London Philharmonic Choir. This year’s Prom, scheduled for Bank Holiday Monday, August 26, will feature a new program that reflects the latest adventures within the Whoniverse. Fans can expect specially arranged pieces from the most recent series starring Ncuti Gatwa, as well as music from the 60th-anniversary specials. Murray Gold, known for his long-standing collaboration with the series, will have his beloved compositions highlighted, alongside contributions from Segun Akinola, who crafted the music for Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor. Audiences will be treated not only to a breathtaking live performance but also to specially edited sequences from the series, which will be displayed on big screens throughout the Royal Albert Hall. As is customary for Doctor Who events, attendees can anticipate appearances from classic monsters as well as surprises that could delight both seasoned fans and newcomers alike. The Doctor Who Prom will feature two performances on that day—one at 2:30 PM and another at 7 PM, with the latter broadcast live on BBC Radio 3. The event is designed to be accessible, with audio description provided by Timna Fibert and British Sign Language interpretation available. As part of the ongoing BBC Proms 2024 season, which has already seen record-breaking ticket sales, the Doctor Who Prom stands out as a highlight in a lineup that celebrates a wide range of musical genres and styles. This year’s Proms season, running from July 19 to September 14, showcases 90 concerts, aiming to deliver exceptional music experiences at an accessible price point, continuing the original vision of founder-conductor Henry Wood. With tickets still available, including an allocation of Promming tickets priced at only £8, the anticipation surrounding the Doctor Who Prom is palpable, promising to be an unforgettable celebration of music and fandom within the Whoniverse.
