Ramsgate's Royal Harbour has officially been designated as a heritage harbour, joining an elite group of 14 sites across the UK that have received this prestigious status. This recognition is a significant achievement for Ramsgate, reflecting the harbour’s rich maritime history and its importance to the local community. The initiative to grant Ramsgate Royal Harbour heritage status is a collaborative effort involving local organizations, Historic England, the Maritime Heritage Trust, and National Historic Ships. The aim of this partnership is to safeguard the harbour's historic character for future generations, ensuring that its unique charm and significance are preserved amidst the changing tides of modern development. To celebrate this milestone, a series of events is scheduled from September 6 to 15 as part of the Heritage Open Days festival. Residents and visitors alike will have the opportunity to engage with the harbour’s rich history through a variety of activities, including talks, guided tours, and workshops. A special exhibition showcasing historic maritime artefacts will also be on display, offering a rare glimpse into the past. Furthermore, select areas of the harbour that are not typically open to the public will be accessible, providing an intimate look at the heritage that has shaped Ramsgate’s identity. The heritage status is not just a badge of honor; it is anticipated to enhance Ramsgate’s appeal as a tourist destination and attract additional funding for preservation efforts. With its picturesque setting and historical significance, the harbour is poised to become a focal point for visitors seeking to explore the maritime legacy of the area. Looking ahead, Ramsgate Royal Harbour is set to play a pivotal role in commemorating the 85th anniversary of the Dunkirk evacuations in spring 2025. The Royal Temple Yacht Club, which was instrumental in coordinating the flotilla of small vessels that carried allied troops to safety during the evacuation, will welcome 50 of the surviving ships for this momentous occasion. This event is expected to draw significant attention, further highlighting the harbour's historical relevance and its connection to pivotal moments in maritime history. As Ramsgate Royal Harbour embraces its new heritage status, the community can look forward to a future that honors its past while fostering a vibrant cultural landscape that celebrates its maritime roots.
