Beth Mooney shone brightly on the field at Old Trafford, leading the Manchester Originals to a 17-run victory over the Northern Superchargers in the women’s Hundred competition. With a remarkable unbeaten 99 runs off just 54 balls, Mooney not only showcased her batting prowess but also etched her name into the competition's history, recording the second-highest score ever. The Originals set a competitive target of 151-3 after winning the toss and opting to bat first. Mooney's stellar performance was complemented by an opening partnership of 60 runs with Laura Wolvaardt. Although Wolvaardt was stumped by Linsey Smith, Mooney continued her assault, amassing 51 runs in a significant 67-run partnership with Kathryn Bryce. The latter was retired with 10 balls remaining, allowing for Sophie Ecclestone to step in. However, in a dramatic twist, Ecclestone was run out on the last ball of the innings, just as Mooney was tantalizingly close to reaching her century. In reply, the Northern Superchargers struggled to chase down the target. They lost their openers, Davina Perrin and Hollie Armitage, for single-digit scores early in their innings. Despite a commendable 45 runs from Phoebe Litchfield, the Superchargers faltered at critical moments. After a promising partnership between Litchfield and Annabel Sutherland, which produced 41 runs for the third wicket, the Originals' bowlers tightened their grip. Kim Garth claimed Litchfield’s wicket, while Kathryn Bryce, in a stellar bowling display, took three wickets in the closing stages, including that of Sutherland and Georgia Wareham, as the Superchargers collapsed to 134-8. Despite the victory, the Originals' hopes for progressing to the playoffs were dashed earlier in the day due to results elsewhere. They now stand with six points, facing an uphill battle as they can no longer qualify for the knockout rounds. On the other hand, the Superchargers have one last chance to secure their place in the playoffs, set to face London Spirit on Tuesday. Reflecting on her near-century, Mooney expressed satisfaction with her performance, stating, "Pretty good day out for the Originals. If you told me this morning I'd have scored that many runs I'd have taken it. It’s about putting the team in a winning position." With her record-breaking talent and competitive spirit, Mooney continues to be a formidable presence on the pitch. As the competition heats up, all eyes will be on the upcoming Midlands derby where Birmingham Phoenix will host Trent Rockets at Edgbaston, promising another thrilling encounter in this exhilarating tournament.
