Plans to enhance grassroots sports facilities in Doncaster have taken a significant step forward, as the local council has approved the transformation of a school playing field into a state-of-the-art 3G artificial grass pitch at Campsmount Academy. This ambitious project aims to address longstanding issues associated with the existing natural grass pitch, which has frequently been rendered unusable due to flooding. The newly approved pitch will not only feature high-quality synthetic turf, but also include modern amenities such as floodlights, viewing areas, and perimeter fencing. Funding for the project will come partly from the Football Foundation, the UK's largest sports charity, which secures financial support from prominent organizations, including the Premier League and the Football Association. Local stakeholders anticipate that the upgraded facility will enhance sports participation in the area, with a focus on inclusivity and community engagement. The pitch will be made available for use by various community groups when not in operation for school activities. Local organizations, including Doncaster Mind, Doncaster Netters, Leger Sport Netball Club, Askern Miners, Carcroft FC, and Adwick Park Rangers, have already expressed interest in utilizing the pitch. Additionally, mental health organizations and groups like Mental Health FC are keen to incorporate the facility into their programs. In response to concerns about biodiversity and the environmental impact of converting a portion of the school’s greenery into synthetic turf, the plans include measures to mitigate these effects. The school will enhance grassland in other areas and plant 25 trees to offset the loss of greenery, emphasizing a commitment to maintaining ecological balance in the community. The community access to the new pitch will be managed through a booking system, ensuring that local groups can utilize the facility outside of school hours and on weekends. This initiative is expected to foster a stronger sense of community and promote active lifestyles among residents of all ages. As the plans move forward, the local community is optimistic about the potential benefits of the upgraded sports facilities. With improved access to quality sports infrastructure, the project at Campsmount Academy represents a significant investment in the health, well-being, and cohesion of the Doncaster community.
