In a significant step towards enhancing sustainable transport options, Oxford has introduced a fleet of 100 new e-bikes available for hire in the city centre. This initiative, spearheaded by Voi, builds upon the company’s previous introduction of e-scooters to Oxford in February 2021, expanding the city’s green mobility offerings. The newly launched e-bikes are accessible to anyone aged 16 and over, making them a convenient choice for a wide demographic. The e-bikes can be picked up from the existing e-scooter parks scattered throughout the city, ensuring that users have easy access to this eco-friendly mode of transportation. Liz Leffman, leader of Oxfordshire County Council, expressed her enthusiasm for the new e-bike initiative, highlighting the increased mobility it will afford residents and visitors alike. “I’m very excited that the city is now benefitting from public bike hire that can be easily accessed and presents the chance to use e-bikes in city travel without cost being an obstacle,” she remarked. Leffman emphasized the potential of the e-bikes to transform how people navigate Oxford, offering an efficient alternative to traditional transport. The introduction of the e-bikes aligns with a growing trend across the UK, where similar schemes have been successfully rolled out in cities such as Bristol, Peterborough, and Liverpool. These initiatives reflect a broader commitment to reducing carbon footprints and promoting healthier lifestyles through active transport options. As Oxford embraces this new fleet, residents are encouraged to take advantage of the e-bikes, not only for their convenience but also as part of a collective effort to create a more sustainable urban environment. With the addition of 100 e-bikes, the city is taking a substantial step towards enhancing its public transport ecosystem, fostering a culture of cycling, and ensuring that moving around Oxford remains accessible to all.
