Since its launch in April, the innovative Passeport Escales scheme has significantly boosted Guernsey’s maritime appeal, attracting more than 300 mariners to the island. This initiative allows boat owners to enjoy complimentary stays at over 150 marinas across Europe, providing a unique opportunity for leisure sailors to explore Guernsey’s scenic coastline without the burden of docking fees for their first two nights. As a member of this reciprocal agreement, Guernsey Ports has positioned itself as a favorable destination within a network that spans the UK, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain. The scheme not only encourages mariners to visit the island but also promotes Guernsey’s renowned cruising grounds to a broader audience of maritime enthusiasts. Kieran Higgs, assistant harbour-master, emphasized the positive impact the scheme has already had on the local maritime community. “This has helped put Guernsey on the map and promote our excellent cruising grounds to a whole new audience,” he noted. The influx of over 300 visiting mariners suggests that the initiative is successfully raising the island’s profile in the competitive world of marine tourism. Local berth holders who wish to participate in the scheme must register with the Marine Services Centre. This step ensures that Guernsey continues to benefit from the reciprocal nature of the Passeport Escales agreement, allowing local boat owners to also enjoy free nights at participating marinas abroad. The scheme is more than just a promotional tool; it is an economic stimulant for the island. By attracting more visitors, Guernsey stands to benefit from increased spending in various sectors, including hospitality, retail, and local attractions. As the boating season continues, the number of visitors is expected to rise, further solidifying Guernsey’s status as a must-visit destination for mariners. In a world where travelers seek value and unique experiences, this initiative embodies the spirit of collaboration and innovation that is essential for thriving maritime communities. With continued participation and promotion, Guernsey is well on its way to becoming an integral part of the European sailing circuit.
