The legacy of José Abelardo Quiñones: Peruvian Air Force Day

On July 23, 1941, was marked in the history of Peru as the day a brave aviator gave his life in defense of the homeland. On July 22, 1941, hostilities erupted on the border between Peru and Ecuador, with Ecuadorian incursions leading to a full-fledged battle the following day. The attack from the early hours of July 23 resulted in casualties on the Peruvian side, including First Sergeant Pedro Chamco Chumbi, who lost his life in defense of his homeland. On the morning of July 23, José Abelardo Quiñones undertook a risky mission aboard his North American NA-50 aircraft. With courage and determination, he headed towards the enemy's antiaircraft nest in Quebrada Seca, where he heroically sacrificed himself in an act that would be etched in the collective memory as an example of integrity and dedication to the homeland. The press of the time reflected the events with headlines announcing the border clashes and the bravery of the Peruvian forces in defending the national territory. Despite conflicting versions between both countries, the truth prevailed, and the courage of the Peruvian soldiers who successfully repelled the enemy attack was acknowledged. Following the death of José Abelardo Quiñones, the Peruvian forces managed to advance and expel the invaders from the national territory, reclaiming the lost sovereignty. The sacrifice of the young aviator was not in vain, and his legacy endures in the memory of all Peruvians as a symbol of patriotism and bravery. Years later, in an act of recognition of his heroism, José Abelardo Quiñones González was posthumously promoted to the rank of Captain and declared a 'National Hero' by Law No. 16126.
