The Minister of Economy and Finance, José Arista, has stated that the current moment is not conducive to discussing an increase in the minimum wage in the country. According to Arista, the government of Dina Boluarte is hoping for an improvement in the economy before considering this issue, taking into account indicators such as the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). In an interview with RPP, Arista mentioned that the wage increase could be debated once the economy starts to recover in the coming months. Additionally, the minister referred to the debate in Congress regarding the reform of the pension system, expressing concern about some details of the bill, such as the proposal to allocate 1% of the General Sales Tax (IGV) to the pension fund. On the other hand, Arista supported the initiative of the National Superintendence of Customs and Tax Administration (Sunat) to tax the streaming platform Netflix in Peru, considering it a common practice in other countries in the region. Furthermore, the minister highlighted the importance of the Port of Chancay, stating that this project inaugurated in December will transform the country's logistics chain and allow for the exportation of agricultural products, generating employment for the population. While Minister Arista acknowledges the relevance of these economic issues, he makes it clear that the government prioritizes stabilizing the economy before addressing significant changes such as an increase in the minimum wage. With these comments, it is expected that a debate will be generated around economic and labor policies in the country, in a context of uncertainty and challenges in the current situation.
