The skies across parts of Wales were transformed into a breathtaking canvas of colors as the Northern Lights made a rare appearance on Sunday night. The natural phenomenon, also known as the Aurora Borealis, painted the night sky with vibrant hues of green, red, blue, and purple. One of the mesmerizing scenes captured the Northern Lights against the majestic backdrop of Pen y Fan and Corn Du, beautifully adorned with a blanket of snow. The highest peak in Bannau Brycheiniog National Park served as a stunning setting for the celestial display, offering a truly magical sight for onlookers. In addition to the residents of Swansea, Gwynedd, and Flintshire, enthusiasts and photographers eagerly awaited the spectacle, eagerly anticipating the light show that occurs when charged particles from the sun collide with gases in the Earth's atmosphere. Mark Griffiths, who leads the Cheshire Northern Light Hunters group, embarked on a journey from Crewe to Talacre beach in Flintshire with a group of fellow aurora chasers. Describing the night as "fab," Griffiths expressed his awe at witnessing one of the best displays of the Northern Lights in the UK in years, surpassing even his frequent visits to Iceland for similar sightings. The Met Office notes that the Northern Lights are most commonly observed during the Equinox in March and September when the Earth's tilt relative to the sun is neutral. The distinct colors seen in the aurora, ranging from green to red to blue and purple, are a result of the interaction between charged particles and different gases in the atmosphere. Photographers who stayed up late to witness and capture the stunning phenomenon shared their images with the BBC, allowing a wider audience to appreciate the ethereal beauty of the Northern Lights that illuminated the Welsh skies on this enchanting evening.
