Ukraine has made the difficult decision to completely withdraw from Avdiivka in eastern Ukraine, a city that had served as a crucial military stronghold for many years. The order came in response to intense Russian bombardment and unrelenting assaults, forcing Ukrainian forces to abandon the city before dawn on Saturday. General Oleksandr Syrsky, Ukraine's top military commander, explained that the withdrawal was necessary to prevent encirclement and protect the lives of their soldiers. Avdiivka, once home to 30,000 residents, now lies in ruins following the prolonged conflict. This retreat marks a significant victory for Russian forces, their first major advance since the previous year. Over the past weeks, Russian troops have escalated their offensive along the extensive 600-mile front, applying pressure across various points. Prior to the complete withdrawal, Ukrainian forces had already started pulling back from positions in the city's southern area. Faced with the overwhelming firepower and manpower of the Russian military, Ukrainian Commander Oleksandr Tarnavskyi acknowledged the grim reality that leaving Avdiivka was the only viable option to prevent being surrounded.
