Prominent Black Church Leaders Call for U.S. to Halt Aid to Israel The African Methodist Episcopal Church Bishops Council has condemned American financial aid to Israel, labeling it as support for "mass genocide." The council, composed of senior bishops, including Bishop Stafford J. N. Wicker, urged the United States to cease its funding of Israel amid the ongoing military campaign in Gaza. Black faith leaders have been advocating for a halt to the Israel-Hamas conflict, with casualties in Gaza surpassing 28,000, predominantly women and children. The A.M.E. council's plea for the termination of U.S. financial support for Israel coincides with escalating tensions in Gaza, as Israeli forces advance into southern regions and prepare for a ground offensive in Rafah. The conflict between Israel and Hamas, reignited in October, has strained relations between President Biden and African Americans, who have increasingly shown solidarity with the plight of Palestinians. Many Black clergy members fear that President Biden's support for Israel during the war could deteriorate his rapport with Black voters, a pivotal demographic for Democrats.
