Wakefield is getting ready to don a shade of pink once again as it gears up for its annual festival celebrating its deep-rooted connection to rhubarb. The vegetable has a long history in the area, with a significant portion of it being cultivated in the Rhubarb Triangle, a nine-square-mile stretch encompassing Wakefield, Morley, and Rothwell. Rhubarb thrives in the cold, damp Yorkshire winters and is typically grown in dark forcing sheds, where the sound of its growth can be faintly heard. The city's Rhubarb Festival is scheduled to take place from February 16 to 18, offering a host of activities for all ages. Local farmer Janet Oldroyd-Hume shared insights into the unique process of growing Yorkshire forced rhubarb, highlighting the intricate methods used to produce the vibrant vegetable. Originally, the forcing sheds were warmed by coal from nearby mines within the Rhubarb Triangle, creating a fitting link to the region's industrial past. The festival promises a diverse lineup of events, including over 50 stalls showcasing local delicacies, cooking demonstrations by chefs, and lively street performances. Various eateries and bars in Wakefield will also be featuring rhubarb-inspired dishes and beverages over the festival weekend, adding a flavorful twist to the celebratory atmosphere.
