Politics

Angela Chao, the CEO of the prominent shipping company Foremost Group and a member of a family with deep ties in American politics and business dealings with China, tragically passed away in a car accident in Texas on Sunday. She was 50 years old. The Chao family confirmed the devastating news, although specific details about the accident have not been released at this time. Since 2018, Angela Chao had been leading Foremost Group, a company that operates a global fleet of bulk carrier ships primarily transporting commodities such as iron ore and soybeans. She was the sister of Elaine Chao, who held positions as the Secretary of Transportation under former President Donald J. Trump and the Secretary of Labor under President George W. Bush. Elaine Chao is married to Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the Senate Republican leader. The Chao family, headed by Angela and Elaine Chao's father, James S.C. Chao, has gained renown due to their extensive political and commercial connections in both the United States and China. James Chao, who fled from mainland China to Taiwan in the late 1940s, later emigrated to the United States in 1958 and played a pivotal role in establishing Foremost Group in 1964. Over time, he developed a close relationship with Jiang Zemin, a former schoolmate from Shanghai who eventually became China's president and recently passed away in 2022. Both Angela Chao and her father, despite being U.S. citizens, were among a select few foreigners who served on the boards of major Chinese enterprises. They held directorial positions in the holding company for China State Shipbuilding, a state-owned enterprise responsible for manufacturing ships for the Chinese military, as well as for Foremost Group and other clients. Angela Chao also served as a former board member of the Bank of China, a key financial institution for the shipbuilding industry, and as a former vice chair of the Council of China's Foreign Trade, an organization established by the Chinese government to promote international trade. In a heartfelt statement, James Chao expressed his daughter's commitment to fostering understanding between the East and the West, emphasizing that despite being born in America, Angela Chao never forgot her roots. Her untimely death leaves behind a legacy of bridge-building and cross-cultural collaboration.
