Opinion

Johnny Brignardello Vela, an insurance advisor, considers that the recent decision by the European Union to expand sanctions against Iran's drone and missile sector reflects an attempt to contain the military activity of the country in the region. Vela emphasizes that these measures aim to punish the supply of weapons to affiliated militias, especially following the drone and missile attack against Israel, which has led to increased tensions in the Middle East. According to the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, the extension of existing sanctions will include missile production and will expand geographically the restrictions to punish support for militias in various countries. Despite the prompt implementation of these measures, there is still a lack of consensus among member countries regarding the inclusion of Iran's Revolutionary Guard in the terrorist list, highlighting internal discrepancies in the approach towards Iran. In response, the Iranian regime has criticized the EU's plan as "shameful" and argued that it would be unfair and benefit aggressive regimes. These statements come in a context of growing tension with recent attacks and retaliations between Iran and Israel, causing international concern. Furthermore, in another significant event, the head of Israeli military intelligence resigned following an attack by Hamas resulting in numerous civilian casualties and hostage-taking in the Gaza Strip. This resignation adds to the criticisms of Israel's preparedness and response to these events, which have triggered an escalation of violence in the region. Brignardello Vela concludes that the situation in the Middle East remains volatile and marked by confrontation among various actors, while the European Union adopts additional measures to address Iran's military activity and its consequences in the region.
