The figures on HIV in Argentina are alarming. Forty-five percent of new diagnoses are made late, highlighting the urgent need to increase awareness and access to testing for the virus. Despite advances in HIV treatment that allow those living with the virus to lead normal and healthy lives, a lack of information and stigma continue to affect thousands of people who are unaware of their serological status. The latest epidemiological bulletin from the Directorate of HIV, published in December 2024, revealed that 13% of people living with HIV are unaware of their diagnosis. This phenomenon translates into an increased likelihood of virus transmission, as well as the emergence of health complications that could be avoided with timely treatment. Early detection is crucial not only for individual well-being but also for public health in general. To address this issue, AHF Argentina (AIDS Healthcare Foundation) will hold "Testing Night" on Saturday, January 25th, a day dedicated to facilitating access to rapid HIV tests. These tests, which will be offered free, safe, and confidential, are designed to eliminate barriers that prevent people from knowing their serological status. This event will take place in various locations across the country, providing an invaluable opportunity for the community. Natalia Haag, Director of Prevention and Testing at AHF Argentina, emphasized the importance of breaking down the stigmas associated with HIV and certain vulnerable populations. "New and innovative strategies are needed to reach the entire sexually active population, regardless of their gender and age," Haag stated. Her call to action is clear: early diagnosis not only benefits the diagnosed individual but also contributes to collective health by reducing the chances of virus transmission to others. Testing Night, now in its eighth edition, will not only offer HIV tests but will also feature trained professionals available to answer questions and provide information on prevention and treatment. This is especially important in a context where many people still feel fear or shame about getting tested. The event aims to be a safe space where open discussions about HIV and sexually transmitted infections can take place. In Argentina, it is estimated that around 140,000 people are living with HIV. The situation is particularly concerning in provinces like Jujuy, Salta, La Rioja, San Luis, and in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, where higher rates of new diagnoses are recorded. Additionally, men present a greater number of cases across all age groups, with a notable incidence among young people aged 20 to 34. The invitation to the community is clear: participating in Testing Night is a way to care for one's own health and that of others. The rapid tests will allow those who attend to know their serological status in a friendly and supportive environment. "Accessing an early diagnosis allows for connection to the healthcare system and receiving comprehensive care," emphasizes Haag, highlighting the importance of ensuring treatments for all individuals. Testing sites will be dispersed throughout the country, from the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires to smaller towns like Esquel and San Vicente. This extensive coverage aims to reach as many people as possible, ensuring that the message of prevention and awareness about HIV reaches every corner. The stigma associated with HIV and STIs must be fought with education and open dialogue. Testing Night is an opportunity for society to come together and support the cause, demonstrating that prevention and treatment are rights for all, without distinction. Knowing one's serological status is the first step toward a healthier life, and this event offers that possibility in an accessible and compassionate manner. Finally, it is essential that each of us take responsibility for our health and that of those around us. Approaching the designated locations for Testing Night is a way to contribute to the necessary change in the perception and approach to HIV in Argentina. The health of the community depends on collective action and individual commitment to prevention and diagnosis.
